Barrier Requirements

General Swimming Pool Fence Code

  • Fences must be 48" tall (some states require 60")
  • Fence spacing may not exceed 4" (eliminate handholds and footholds)
  • All fence gates must open outwards, be self closing, and have an auto locking pool latch

Contact your County/City for your specific fence requirement!

For more information please see the Safety Barrier Guidelines for Residential Pools below.

Wire Mesh Alternative

If your fence is not code compliant, instead of replacing it, you can do the below:

  • Install a wire mesh on the outside of your entire fence
  • Wire mesh must meet the ground - gap to ground cannot be more than 2"
  • Wire mesh must be "permanently attached", you can use wire twist ties of the same gauge (no plastic zip ties)

Wire Mesh Requirements:

  • Wire mesh must be 48" tall
  • Wire mesh must be 6-11 gauge and must be welded together (not woven or tied)
  • Wire mesh spacing between vertical parts may not be more than 1" 3/4

Contact your County/City for your specific mesh requirement! It may not be as strict!
